The cruel treatment of political prisoner Lynne Stewart

Lynne Stewart has breast cancer and it is spreading to her lungs and shoulders. She is not receiving the medical attention she needs which is unfortunately the norm for political prisoners and prisoners in general. The prison officials have known about her dire need for proper medical treatment since September of 2012. The denial of medical attention amounts to cruel treatment and tantamount to torture and violates her human rights as well as others finding themselves in similar situations.

Lynne Stewart is a human rights activist in her own right and a former attorney who represented poor and often marginalized defendants. Several members of Harlem CORE, both ‘nationalists’ and ‘civil rights’ types, have spoken very highly of her. She was convicted on trumped up charges of conspiracy and providing material support to terrorists in 2005 and sentenced to 28 months in prison in a case involving her client Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman, an Egyptian cleric who many say was convicted on trumped up charges related planning terror attacks. The prosecutor in the case was unhappy with the 28-month sentence, appealed the decision, and now Stewart is under a 10-year sentence that many say was politically motivated.

Lynne’s husband and Harlem Core member Ralph Poynter joins us again to update us on the case.

Lynne’s supporters ask that you write a letter of support to Lynne Stewart- 53504 – 054, FEDERAL MEDICAL CNTR, CARSWELL, P.O. BOX 27137, FT. WORTH, TEXAS 76127. They are also asking people to share information about her case especially with lawyers because they should support her request to have her case heard by the U.S. Supreme Court.
